Punset
NEIVE | BARBARESCO | PIEDMONT | ITALY
Marina Marcarino knew she was going to make wine at her family's property, Punset, in Neive from a young age. She was an exuberant, curious, and hyperactive little girl, and she credits her grandmother with having opened the door to a life of working outside in nature. Punset, meaning "pretty hill" in Piedmontese dialect, had long been considered one of the most beautiful sites in Neive. Marina's ancestors made wine only for private consumption, until 1964 when Renzo Marcarino took the first bottle of Punset to market. Then his daughter Marina joined him in the vineyards and cellar. In the early 1980s, Marina furthered her philosophy of mutual respect with nature by converting the large, contiguous family property to organic viticulture. In the 1990s she began working biodynamically, and these days Punset is farmed using Fukuoka method, letting grass and wildflowers grow between the rows, and limiting use of machines including tractors. In the cellar, Marina is a staunch traditionalist: no added yeasts or enzymes, letting the fruit express the terroir of the vineyard. Her Barbareschi: 2016 Baserin and 2015 Campo Quadro (both Riserva) see long fermentations between 35 and 45 days, followed by long aging in mostly Slavonian botti, but French barrels are also featured from time to time depending on the wine and vintage. To be in the presence of Marina Marcarino, the woman, the vineyards, the winery, and the wines, is to be in the presence of a clear and unique vision, realized with great effort, and offering great reward.
